Music has always been my passion. When I was five, I began asking for singing lessons and finally, when I was seven, it was agreed I could take piano lessons. So, I decided that my piano would be my singing teacher, and it was. I sang along with every song I learned to play. You can imagine the interesting variety of popular and classical music I was singing.
Growing up in North Bay, I also belonged to the local ‘garage’ band, played percussion in the school bands and performed in our high school musical productions under the musical direction of Bob Pyper, who happens to be a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
I am a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and I have been working for a major insurance firm since 1988. In 1991, I joined its Christmas choir and met my friend Kelly who introduced me to the Toronto Accolades and the barbershop style of singing.
I loved the harmonies from the first barbershop chord I heard sung. For almost ten years I was a singing member of the Toronto Accolades and also spent time as lead section lead, registered quartet competitor in Act-A-Chordingly, board member and music chair. Then it happened. In 2000, we needed a director and we decided I should give it a try. The chorus gives me incredible support as I strive to be a better director and help lead this wonderful group of women to our common goal of continuously improving our performance.
Other joys in my life include my two sons Alex and Matthew (no surprise they both play musical instruments, like to sing and are developing good voices), my husband Rob, who also loves the barbershop style of life (a lead singer in MegaCity chorus and Past President of the Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society), singing baritone in the North Metro Chorus , and singing with my new quartet, Ricochet. In addition to my family and music, I also really enjoy my extended family, my friends, reading, running and going to the movies.
